It is very interesting that if you do not have the desire you do not feel the need. For example, if you do not have the desire to have a luxury car, you do not feel the need to own one. But if you have the desire, then you feel troubled by the need to own one. And until you own it you may feel restless and ponder over ways to own it and thus your mind stays disturbed by the desired need. Now to satisfy the needs that arise from desires may or may not be always under our power. For example, if you do not have the required money or ability to pay the required EMI you may not be able to own the car, but since you have the desire and feel its need, your inability to own the desired object may disappointment you and can make you feel sad about it. Similarly like the example, the mind may be troubled by a lot of such desired needs, but the good news is that if you let go of the desire you no longer feel the need. Since fulfilling the felt needs may or may not be under our control, we should target the root cause of the want, which is desire, and try to let it go. Letting go of a desire is under our direct power and control. Sure it may hurt us to let go of a desire, but the series of desires that one desire can lead us to and the damage it can cause to the serenity of the mind is way more than it would hurt to let go of a desire which is neither necessary nor essential.
